AUTV 20 again named Finalist for 2022-2023 Intercollegiate Broadcasting system award

AUTV 20, the Journalism and Digital Media department's student-led co-curricular television station, received news that it was named a Finalist for the second year in a row in the Best College/University Television Station category from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. IBS is the oldest and most renowned collegiate awards competiton in the country. As a Finalist, AUTV 20 is recognized as one of the six best student television stations in the competition. Dr. Dave McCoy, JDM Chair and AUTV 20 Faculty Advisor, notes that "hard word, a shared vision and a creative spirit from both the production staff and student media leaders enabled this fantastic recognition." Specific thanks goes out to the station's leadership team over the past two years: Carrie Smith (Station Manager), Sean Repuyan (Station Manager), Lydia Bice (Executive News Producer), Ethan Jenkins (Executive News Producer), Lewis Markham (Executive Sports Producer), Cade Cracas (Executive Sports Producer), Gracie Wilson (Producer), Katelyn Meeks (Producer), Gage Eldridge (Production Manager), and Logan Gray (Program Director). The First Place Award in this category will be named at the national IBS convention in March 2023.

JDM Fall 2022 Graduates honored at AU Commencement

On Saturday December 17th, multiple students associated with the Journalism and Digital Media department graduated from Ashland University. They are: Johnathan Albright, Digital Media Production major; Katie Foster, Digital Media Journalism minor; Nathan Langdon, Digital Media Production major; Jordyn Perry-Hanley, Commercial Art and Design with a concentration in Digital Media Production major; Mackenzie Pflum, Digital Media Journalism major; and Wesley Seyfang, Digital Media Production major. JDM department founder Matt Tullis passes away

Matt Tullis, a founding faculty member of the Journalism and Digital Media department at Ashland University, passed away on Friday from post-brain surgery complications. Matt was a talented writer, reporter, teacher and mentor. Above all, he was a valued friend to all. He leaves behind his wife Alyssa and two children. JDM mourns his passing, but reflects on his impactful life and celebrates his wit and insight. Somewhere today he is running and searching for that next meaningful story.

First AUTV 20 News Break of Fall 2022

With the changing of the seasons and the rise of the fall semester, Journalism and Digital Media students who work for AUTV 20 are back in swing producing the station's national award-winning News Break program. The telecast was anchored by Executive News Producer Ethan Jenkins and directed by Executive Sports Producer Cade Cracas.

JDM welcomes new majors at AU Orientation Days

What an exciting time of the year for the Journalism and Digital Media department. In May, we successfully saw our seniors graduate and move into their first professional jobs. In a very busy June, there were two high school campus tour open houses and five AU Orientation Days for incoming First-Year students. During the Orientation Days, the JDM department hosted fifteen incoming Digital Media Journalism and Digital Media Production majors. Cannot wait until August!

The Collegian earns First Place award from ASPA

It was a fruitful year for the student journalists in the Journalism and Digital Media department. In March, AU-Live.com won a First Place award from the Ohio News Media Association in the Best Multimedia Package category. Not to be outdone, The Collegian just received a First Place award from the American Scholastic Press Association in the Best College and University Newspapers large school division. ASPA operates a yearly national competition for both collegiate and scholastic media publications. The ASPA focuses on selecting and highlighting the stellar work of both journalism students and media departments. Special thanks go out to Ted Daniels, The Collegian faculty advisor, and Gracie Wilson, The Collegian managing editor, along with the dedicated group of editors and reporters who work tirelessly on these publications.

Eagles Eye: Carrie Smith

Congratulations to Digital Media Production major Carrie Smith, who graduated on May 7th. Carrie was the General Manager of AUTV-20 and Promotions Director for 88.9 WRDL. She was also a host of The Early Bird's Word morning radio show for WRDL the past two years. During her time at Ashland University, Carrie was honored with the first Robin Meade Scholarship, the Weidenmeyer-Sindelar Scholarship,and the AU JDM Department Academic Honors Award (3 years). Carrie will be pursuing a career in radio, as she was hired by K96 WKFM and 95.3 WLKR to a board operator/announcer position.

AUTV 20 Candidate Forum live broadcast

AUTV 20 will air the Candidate Forum program live at 7 pm on Wednesday April 27th. The program, moderated by AUTV 20 Executive News Producer Lydia Bice, will feature two candidates (Victor Perez and David Stimpert) vying for the Ashland County Common Pleas Court Judge position. Additionally, the telecast will have a panel of local journalists (Dylan Carr from the Ashland Source, Grant Ritchie from the Ashland Times-Gazette and Katie Foster from The Collegian/AU-Live. Candidate Forum can be seen on Channel 20 of Ashland's Armstrong Cable or on the JDM Streaming Channel.

JDM students feted at AU Academic Awards Convocation

The Journalism and Digital Media department is blessed with many talented and dedicated majors and minors. However, it is also home to some very high-achieving academic scholars. Vinylthon 2022 broadcasts live on 88.9 WRDL

Tonight (Friday April 22nd) from 7 pm to 12 midnight on Saturday April 23rd, 88.9 WRDL will play vinyl records only for your listening pleasure. It is the fifth year that WRDL has contributed to Vinylthon. The DJ line up is stellar! Program graduates (from both the Radio-Television and Journalism and Digital Media eras), current JDM majors, faculty and friends of the radio station will be selecting and presentating their favorite songs. Chante Rutherford starts professional career in Columbus

Former AUTV 20 General Manager and May 2021 graduate Chante Rutherford did not need to go far for her first professional media job. Chante, a resident of Columbus, was recently hired to the production department at WSYX Channel 6. She started work in April and will now join JDM alumna Kate Siefert at the ABC affiliate. Good luck to Chante!

JDM Student Media honored in 2022 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards

Journalism and Digital Media student media outlets AUTV 20 and 88.9 WRDL received numerous national collegiate media awards at the 2022 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System competition. AUTV 20 won a 1st Place award in the Best Sports Report category for the News Break program. Producers Carrie Smith, Lewis Markham and Ben Voelker were feted for their outstanding work on this production. Television station AUTV 20 received IBS Finalist awards for Best College/University Television Station and Best Television Talk Program. Radio station 88.9 WRDL garnerned three IBS Finalist awards for Best Sports Play-by-Play (Men's Basketball), Best Campus/Community News, and Best Newscast. JDM salutes the stellar work of the media students and 88.9 WRDL General Manager Derek Wood and JDM Director of Broadcasting and Operations John Skrada for these notable honors.

The Collegian wins 1st Place Award in 2022 Ohio News Media Association competition

The Collegian received a 1st Place Award in the 2022 Ohio News Media Association's Ohio Collegiate Newspaper and Best Website Awards. The entry "Students elevate voices in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month" was named the Best Multi-Media Package in Division B. It was produced by May 2021 graduate Avaerie Fitzgerald, who was assisted by both Chante Rutherford and Aliyah Sheppard. Fitzgerald created the video story and an in-depth article that appeared in both The Collegian and AU-Live.

More JDM Grads on the move

The graduates from the Journalism and Digital Media program are doing well in the media profession. Three more recent grads are starting careers in Ohio-based companies. Rachel Miller is the Content Creator at DMR Productions in Mansfield, Ohio. December 2021 graduate Evan Laux is now an Associate Editor at Babcox Media in Akron, Ohio. Fellow December 2021 graduate Dean Paolucci has been promoted to Program Director at WQKT radio in Wooster, Ohio.

JDM Grads on the move

Sometimes in the day-to-day workings of operating a very good academic and professionally-oriented Journalism and Digital Media department we might lose sight of the ever-changing growth of our graduates. Recently, four JDM grads moved to new positions within the media industry. Kate Siefert is now a multimedia journalist with WSYX Channel 6 in Columbus, Ohio. Rachel Ramsey has moved to be a news producer with WCMH Channel 4 in Columbus, Ohio. Ryan Sampson is in his native New York City as a digital producer for The New York Post. May 2022 graduate Mackenzie Cook is the new 11 pm producer for WRGT 24/7 Now News in Dayton, Ohio. Congratulations to all of these hard-working and talented professionals.
