JDM Professor publishes "Ghosts I Run With" on SB Nation.com

Matt Tullis mugs during the 2014 Akron Marathon
"After about a year and a half of running, the ghosts appeared."

With those powerful words, JDM Associate Professor Matt Tullis, takes readers on a personal journey in his new #Longread article currently on SB Nation.com, entitled, "The Ghosts I Run With: Surviving Childhood Cancer is a Race That Never Ends."

For Tullis, JDM's Newspaper Advisor and resident Reporter, "Ghosts" was a mini-memoir eight months in the making.

"I've been formulating the idea for a long time but wrote it over spring break." said Tullis.

It's been a busy couple days since his article published on April 15th. On April 16th he received an invitation to appear on the NPR program, Only a Game.

"That was awesome!" said Tullis.

You can read "Ghosts I Run With," on SB Nation.com and hear his OAG segment on 90.3FM, WCPN in Cleveland on Saturday, April 18th at 7am.

Here's a Blog Converged hint before reading "Ghosts," keep the Kleenex handy!

Tullis participates in Nieman Storyboard post

This week, Nieman Storyboard, a project of the NiemanFoundation for Journalism at Harvard University, has been publishing reading lists from some of the top narrative journalism professors in the country.

Today, Matt Tullis, associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Digital Media at Ashland University and host of Gangrey: ThePodcast, was included in Nieman Storyboard’s post. Tullis also serves as the adviser to The Collegian.

Other faculty members who were asked to give examples of what their students were reading are teaching at places like ColumbiaUniversity’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Indiana University School of Journalism, and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Tullis, whose JDM 407 Narrative Journalism is being taught on Wednesday nights this semester, has arranged to have nationally-prominent magazine writers Skype into class every week. Students are reading stories by those reporters and then get the chance to talk with them and ask them questions for up to an hour each Wednesday.

So far, the class has spoken with Mike Sager, who writes for Esquire and has a long and storied career as a narrative journalist and novelist, and Michael Kruse of the Tampa Bay Times. Throughout the rest of the semester, students will get to talk with reporters from Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, ESPN: The Magazine, New York, and Vanity Fair, among others.

New podcast by JDM professor

Journalism and Digital Media professor Matt Tullis has launched a podcast that focuses on literary journalism and the reporters who write it.

The podcast, named Gangrey: The Podcast, is produced twice a month. The first episode featured freelance writer Justin Heckert, who wrote "The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly," a story about a teenage girl who can feel no pain that was published in The New York Times Magazine. You can listen to that episode here.

The second episode featured Michael J. Mooney, a reporter for D Magazine in Dallas. Mooney wrote the story "The Most Amazing Bowling Story Ever" last year. The story is about a recreational bowler's run at perfection, and has been lauded as one of the best nonfiction stories of 2012. You can listen to that episode here.

The idea for the podcast came from Ashland University senior Glenn Battishill, who serves as The Collegian's managing editor and WRDL's program director. Battishill is working on the podcast with Tullis, serving as a producer. Also working on the podcast is AU senior Tyler Remmel. Remmel, who is also The Collegian's design editor, has designed the podcast's logos and is redesigning the podcast website.

Steve Suess, a professional instructor and adviser to WRDL, is also assisting with the podcast.

The podcast is named after a well-respected journalism website called Gangrey.com. That site was founded by reporters at the Tampa Bay Times, and regularly links to the best literary journalism of the day. The founders of that site gave Tullis permission to use the Gangrey name, and have been key in promoting it to a national audience.

You can follow the podcast on Twitter @gangreypodcast.

JDM shows strength on election night

More than 40 Ashland University Journalism and Digital Media students worked for the department's three media outlets Tuesday night, reporting up-to-the-minute election returns and putting out a newspaper full of election-themed material.

The students were joined by all five JDM faculty members — Dr. Gretchen DworznikTim McCartyDr. David McCoy, Steve Suess and Matt Tullis — and operations manager John Skrada.

The evening was highlighted by the fact that AUTV-20 produced its first live programming since being launched last year. It was also the first live programming produced on campus since 2008. TV election coverage consisted of live hits at the top and bottom of the hour, starting at 9 p.m. and running through 11 p.m.

Junior Elizabeth Bucheit anchored the 9 and 10 p.m. hits, and co-anchored the 11 p.m. hit with senior Hilary Neal. Each hit included updated election totals for Ashland County school tax levy issues, including the passage of Ashland City Schools' bond issue to build a new middle school, and updated, statewide vote totals in state congressional races, the Ohio senate race and the Presidential race.

"I thought the election night coverage was a great opportunity for our department," Bucheit said. "Not every university has the opportunity to produce live television, and the fact that as a student I can say that I was part of the live media coverage for such a big election night is incredible."

Bucheit said she was excited to see so many other students get excited about the programming.

"Freshmen were able to put together small packages and increase their skills, while upperclassmen were able to direct, T.D. and get a good feeling of what we're going to be doing after graduation," she said. "Everyone pulled together to create a great show, which made me even more proud of our department than I already was."

The studio crew for the night consisted of Dr. Gretchen Dworznik's studio production class.

"Our election night coverage was the first time we had done live programming since 2008," Dworznik said. "We had stayed away from it as we concentrated on rebuilding the program, but this time we felt confident in our students and our equipment, so we went for it."

Dworznik said the students performed better than anyone could have hoped.

"The content was interesting, up-to-date, and we really felt like we offered the Ashland community something different and valuable," she said. "We are really excited to continue to do more live programming in the future. The experience was invaluable. The students had a great time and they learned, not only from us, but from each other as well."

In the WRDL 88.9 FM studio, several students were also working, broadcasting updated election totals from many of the same races. Many of those students were freshmen.

And in The Collegian office, the newspaper staff was busy finishing up its election issue. Sophomore reporter Teresa Williams and freshman photographer Halee Heironimus canvassed the AU campus looking for election results watch parties. They found the biggest in the Ashbrook Center. The two completed a package, on deadline, that resulted in campus-focused election news.

Senior design editor Tyler Remmel in the meantime worked his magic with the front page of the the newspaper. Remmel changed The Collegian's masthead to a red, white and blue, star-spangled design while also creating his own electoral map of the United States.

"Even though the premise was the same in that we were putting together an issue, it seemed much different than just a normal issue," Remmel said. "When a story is changing as potentially quickly as an election story is, I was making sure to always keep my eyes open to make sure that the visuals I'd planned for were the most effective way of telling the story."

Tullis, the Collegian adviser, he couldn't be happier with the election issue, or with any of the issues this semester.

"The staff is really doing an amazing job," he said. "There's not a college newspaper in Ohio that looks as good as ours, and our content is top notch too."

You can read the entire issue of The Collegian, in PDF form, here.

"I am so blessed to have this opportunity to create an awareness on this important cause while also learning so much more about the film and broadcast industries! (R/TV) Alum featured in JDM's 9.11 Documentary

How do you know you're a Journalist? Like Police, Fire and Medical first responders, when everyone is moving away from danger, a Journalist moves towards the story.

In addition to the many outstanding faculty interviews, a highlight in JDM's new documentary on the 10-year anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, 9.11 Remembered, features an interview with R/TV alum Jess Baker ('02), who along with her partner Laura Allenbaugh ('03), drove from Ashland to NYC with a video camera to cover the biggest story since Pearl Harbor.

Why? Because that's where the story was.

JDM: Got camera?

JDM recently took delivery of a new DSLR for the The Collegian staff.

Canon's 7D DSLR is right in our converged wheelhouse as it shoots 18mp stills and full 1080p HD video with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p (50p or 60p at 720p HD and SD). We paired it with two lenses: a 24-70mm f2.8L, and a 70-200mm f2.8L...

Yeah, serious camera-geekness! Woo-hoo!

Long-form journalism finds new platforms

The Los Angeles Times had a great piece in Sunday's newspaper about new platforms arising for long-form, narrative journalism. The piece talks about new sites like Byliner.com, the Atavist and Virginia Quarterly Review, all of which have given literary journalism a new, highly-visible home.

Byliner / May 15, 2011
Byliner.com launched in a big way with John Krakauer's "Three Cups of Deceit," which was a takedown of Greg Mortenson's untruthful memoir "Three Cups of Tea" and the tremendous amount of money Mortenson takes from the charity he created to fund his own book promotions.

This story backs up our belief here at AU that journalism is not dead, and long-form, literary journalism, still has a strong market. People will read it.
