INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Allison Glass

      http://rawtravel.tv                                                                                                                 Allison Glass is a Senior Digital Media Production major, who recently interned for the Raw Travel Television Show. She had this to say about her experiences:

I loved interning with Robert Rose and the Raw Travel team. They are an exceptional group of wanderers, whose only goal is to share the beauty of the world with others. It was a remarkable experience to watch their work unfold and I cherished my time with them.

This internship experience provided me with an intimate understanding of the television business. I was able to edit scripts, transcribe scripts, view and comment on footage, understand the advertising and financial side of the television business, and become a part of collective effort to produce episodes of this television show. This experience was different than the knowledge I have gained working for Ashland's television station, AUTV20, but it was exceptionally valuable to gain a different perspective. AUTV20 provided the foundation of knowledge, the studio production aspect, of the television business, but my time with Raw Travel quickly gave me a new set of goals and experiences to work into my life.

My work at Raw Travel was very different than my experiences in the classroom at Ashland University, but they both have enriched my life and my professional capabilities immensely. I am forever indebted to these institutions for providing me these opportunities to grow and seek the world beyond.

AUTV 20 Earth Day Programs

Ashland University's campus television station AUTV 20 will feature local and original programming for Earth Day April 22, 2016. The centerpiece of this programming will be the debut of the long-form documentary "Invasion of Lake Erie." Produced and directed by Journalism and Digital Media senior Aaron Lazar, this program examines the negative effect of pesticide runoff into Lake Erie.

AUTV 20 will also debut a short documentary about the environmental sustainability efforts in Ashland county. The documentary was produced by students in the JDM 232 course. Feature interviews with AU associate professor Dr. Andrew Trimble and AU biology student Olivia Widenmeyer will further look at the impact of pollution upon waterways and marshlands. The feature interviews were produced by students in the JDM 213 course.

AUTV 20 News Break debuts new anchor

Ashland University Journalism and Digital Media freshman Ingrid Schmidt debuts as an anchor for AUTV 20 News Break. Ingrid will take over as the full time producer and anchor in Fall 2016. Graduating senior Halee Heironimus originated the program and served as its anchor and producer during the Spring 2016 semester.

Collegian website redesigned

The Collegian website has a new look.

The Ashland University student newspaper, in working with web host TownNews.com, redesigned ashlandcollegian.com. The site launched late Wednesday morning.

The Collegian ended its print edition in December 2015. Adviser Matt Tullis — a former editor-in-chief of the newspaper and now an associate professor of journalism at AU — said the new website was a logical extension of the evolution of the paper.

“When we ended the print edition, we knew we had to spend more time on making the website more appealing,” Tullis said. “The new site is much easier to navigate and looks far less cluttered. We think readers will appreciate the redesign.”

Part of the new site’s appeal, Tullis said, is its visual nature.

“Photos are presented in a much more aesthetic way,” he said, “which means the great work of our student photographers will get the showcase it deserves.”

Stories are also much easier to read, with larger text size and a less-jumbled design.

Kate Siefert Awarded 2016 CAB Scholarship

Journalism and Digital Media junior Kate Siefert was recently named one of three student winners of the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters' annual scholarship. The award committee noted that Kate's outstanding academic achievements and her extensive broadcast experience earned her this prestigious award.

JDM Chair Dr. Dave McCoy added that "Kate is very deserving of this award. She was selected over students from many of the larger electronic media programs in Ohio. This feat is a testament to Kate's abilities and the excellent training and mentoring she has received from the faculty and staff of JDM."

Kate will be recognized at the annual CAB Hall of Fame luncheon on Thursday April 14th in Cleveland.

AU Global makes debut on AUTV 20

AUTV 20's newest series is AU Global. The series is the brainchild of JDM senior Martina Baca. Each week, Martina interviews Ashland University international students on a wide range of subjects, including culture, lifestyle and education. In this telecast, she chats with Phillip Balters. Phillip is an exchange student from Germany. He shares his impressions of AU and reflects upon the unique culture of his homeland.

AUTV 20 Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer interview

Ashland University's Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer, Trustees Professor of Chemistry, sat down with Journalism and Digital Media junior Connor Dunwoodie on AUTV 20's "The Eagle's Eye" television program. Dr. Weidenhamer, who is the coordinator for this year's College of Arts and Sciences Symposium Against Indifference, addressed the topic of environmental sustainability.

This interview is the first in a series of television programs produced by AUTV 20 that will relate to environmental subjects to raise awareness for this year's Earth Day.

The program was produced and directed by JDM junior Sean Honaker and crewed by students in the JDM 232 course.
