Bils is a sports reporter for the St. Joseph News-Press in St. Joseph, Missouri. He won two of the newspaper's nine awards in the Associated Press Managing Editors competition, including a first place honor.
The first place award came in the Sports Feature Writing category. Bils wrote "Captain Kadence," a story about a 6-year-old named Kadence Hailey, who suffers with a kidney disease called Alport Syndrome. The Benton High School football team invited Kadence to practice and made him an honorary captain for a game in October. Bils also made a video story to accompany the award-winning piece.
Bils also won second place for Spot Sports, with his story "Another Masterpiece." This story was a game story from the Division II football national championship game, which Northwest Missouri State won.
