JDM Streaming AU home football games this fall

JDM's hard working remote production crew will again stream all five AU home football games live this fall. Games will also rebroadcast on AUTV20.

"Because we lost several seniors who were regulars on our remote production crew, like a sports team, we had to reload with incoming freshman." AUTV20 Advisor Tim McCarty said. "The new folks all did great!"

As most live remote productions go, JDM's first broadcast was not without a few glitches.

"Beside some first game jitters by our inexperienced crew, our biggest problem for the first game was a technical problem that kept our stream from showing up on the JDM Streaming web page. But we've fixed that and are ready to go Saturday night!" McCarty said.

For those who missed Game 1, you can see a rebroadcast on AUTV20, or at a direct link to the feed.

Game 2 will stream live on the JDM's Streaming page starting on Saturday, September 13th at 7pm.

Tullis participates in Nieman Storyboard post

This week, Nieman Storyboard, a project of the NiemanFoundation for Journalism at Harvard University, has been publishing reading lists from some of the top narrative journalism professors in the country.

Today, Matt Tullis, associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Digital Media at Ashland University and host of Gangrey: ThePodcast, was included in Nieman Storyboard’s post. Tullis also serves as the adviser to The Collegian.

Other faculty members who were asked to give examples of what their students were reading are teaching at places like ColumbiaUniversity’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Indiana University School of Journalism, and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Tullis, whose JDM 407 Narrative Journalism is being taught on Wednesday nights this semester, has arranged to have nationally-prominent magazine writers Skype into class every week. Students are reading stories by those reporters and then get the chance to talk with them and ask them questions for up to an hour each Wednesday.

So far, the class has spoken with Mike Sager, who writes for Esquire and has a long and storied career as a narrative journalist and novelist, and Michael Kruse of the Tampa Bay Times. Throughout the rest of the semester, students will get to talk with reporters from Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, ESPN: The Magazine, New York, and Vanity Fair, among others.

JDM student's hosting gig offers real-world TV experience

Collegian Sports Editor, Kevin Stoicovy
For JDM senior and Collegian Sports Editor, Kevin Stoicovy, the prospect of showing up on campus and only working in one type of media simply wasn't an option. As JDM's most recent graduates proved, a successful major in the program must have a full range of media production experiences.

Which is why when he was asked to host the 2014 Ashland University Football Preview Show, Stoicovy jumped at the opportunity.

"The experience of hosting the football preview show on TV was a culmination of effort and work done in the classroom that will make me more confident and marketable in a competitive job environment." Stoicovy said.

JDM aerials of the Troop Center
For AUTV20 Advisor Tim McCarty, providing real-world experience is an important component of JDM because it helps students prepare for the demands of a converged media industry.

"This is not an easy assignment for the host. We produce this piece exactly how ESPN, or Fox Sports Cleveland would produce it as the turn-around from shoot to air is less than two weeks. We typically shoot the host stand-ups in one day in and around Jack Miller Stadium. The demands we placed on Kevin were exactly the same demands placed on any professional sports reporter." McCarty said.

Despite the challenges of the TV experience, Stoicovy thought his confidence showed in his performance on camera.

"I felt I was prepared thanks to my experience in the classroom at AU and at previous internships I've had. Not only did I feel confident in front of the camera, but I felt comfortable as well, it something I did not have before I started working with AUTV20." Stoicovy said.

The 2014 Ashland Football Preview Show hosted by Kevin Stoicovy airs at 6am, 1pm, 8pm and 11pm  on AUTV20, or check out the show online at the JDM YouTube Channel!

AUTV20 shows off unique aerial shots around campus

Viewers who tune in at the top of every hour to JDM's 24/7 cable outlet on Armstrong, AUTV20, will see AU's campus from a unique perspective in the coming days.

Five new AUTV20 station IDs (Station Identifiers) began airing this week featuring spectacular aerial footage from a drone-mounted HD camera dubbed, "JDM-1." The short spots also feature the voice talent of WRDL 88.9FM Advisor, Steve Suess.

The unique video perspective comes courtesy of JDM Operations Manager, John Skrada's newest "toy," a four prop drone with an HD camera hanging on a gimbal underneath.

"Flying the drone takes a bit a practice to learn but I flew it a lot this summer around my old high school football field and was impressed with how good the video looks." Skrada said. "The footage this system produces rivals very expensive helicopter shots."

For AUTV20 Advisor, Tim McCarty, it's classic John Skrada.

"Whether it's the production truck he built that JDM uses for our sports productions, or helping students edit, or a camera on a drone, John has an incredible passion for creating and helping our students create high quality media. We are so lucky to have him!" McCarty said.

Matt Tullis, an associate professor of journalism and the advisor to The Collegian, said Skrada is the glue that holds the department together.

"His adding a drone to his collection of industry-standard broadcast production equipment is just one more example of how John dramatically improves the look of AUTV20 productions," Tullis said. More importantly, he is giving our students the opportunity to learn another set of skills."

Check out all of the new aerial station IDs on the JDM YouTube Channel and look for more aerial footage this semester on AUTV20!

JDM Internship Spotlight: Kevin Stoicovy

Stoicovy interviews University of Pittsburgh Men's Basketball Coach Jaime Dixon
JDM's Internship Spotlight for August is senior Kevin Stoicovy, who spent his summer working as a Sports Reporter:

Each summer, JDM students build a foundation of skills through class work, labs, practical experiences and internships working towards the ultimate goal of graduate school, or an entry level position in media. While the department placed 100% of last year's seniors, a new year brings a new crop of JDM majors who spent this summer honing media crafts around the country. For the next few weeks, A Blog Converged will highlight where our majors interned, their responsibilities and what JDM courses helped them to achieve a successful internship:

Your Name: Kevin Stoicovy
Title/Position: Sports Reporter
Duties/Responsibilities:
-Creating sports content for the sports segment of the evening news shows
-Editing video for playback on air
-Writing scripts used on the Teleprompter by the sports anchor
Specific classes/skills that have helped you in your position and how?
JDM 336 Broadcast Reporting was extremely helpful in writing scripts for on air content as well as editing video used for the news. Much of the experience I've had with shooting video for AUTV20 at sporting events has been very helpful as well.

JDM Grad Earns Reporting Job Thanks to his Converged Skills

JDM May graduate Chris Bils (pictured left) has just landed a reporting job at the St. Joseph News-Press (26,000 circ.) in St. Joseph, Missouri. Chris will be covering the Northwest Missouri State football beat along with one of the three city high schools.

The paper shares a newsroom with the local Fox affiliate FOX 26 KNPN, so they were looking for someone who could not only write for the paper, but contribute content to the TV station as well. Chris says they wanted someone to be able to do live shots from Friday night football games and video sports features throughout the week.

Chris says, "Thank you for creating a program that so directly led to this wonderful opportunity. I'm excited to be able to carry the JDM flag along with Elizabeth, Becca, Ryan and everyone else who bought in and is now seeing the payoff from all of those long nights in the office and editing lab."

Chris was part of a stellar 2014 JDM graduating class which included Ryan Sampson, who is headed to graduate school at Elon University; Becca Ribley, who is reporting for WAOW-TV in Wausau, WI; Elizabeth Bucheit, who is a production assistant at ESPN; Kristin Yenny, who is a Video Production Specialist for Momentum Media; and Melanie Sudar, who is a Video Production Specialist for Spire Advertising.

Congratulations to all of our amazing graduates and good luck!

JDM students, faculty and staff hired by CBS to produce AUWBB in Kates Gym

On Saturday January 11, 2014, the AU Women's Basketball game against Michigan Tech was broadcast live on CBS Sports Network. On the crew were three JDM seniors and two JDM faculty. Seniors Elizabeth Bucheit (pictured left), Chris Bils, and Ryan Sampson were hired by CBS to run various support positions during the broadcast. AUTV-20 Adviser Tim McCarty was on hand-held camera under the basket, and JDM Operations Manager John Skrada was on a hand-held camera at center court. The students were given the opportunity because of Skrada's connections with CBS through his own free-lance work.

"Because our faculty are still actively working in the media field,  JDM was able to facilitate this opportunity for our students. And because our students are extremely well-trained and all have remote broadcast experience, CBS was more than happy to hire them. Networks don't normally hire students when they come to broadcast games, so it's just a great example of the really unique opportunities we are able to provide that other media programs cannot," said JDM Chair, Dr. Gretchen Dworznik.

You can see more pictures from the game on the JDM Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JDMatAU.
