JDM Hosts Internship Panel
The Department of Journalism and Digital Media hosted it's annual Internship Panel, Thursday, November 14 at 6:30pm. The department hosts the panel every fall to give students a chance to learn about how to get an internship. Plus, they get to hear from some of their peers who have interned.
This year's panelists included (from left to right) Chris Bils, Andrea Stevenson, Rebecca Ribley and Katy Kigaki. Bils is currently interning with the Columbus Crew; Stevenson interned during the summer with a Columbus radio group; Rebecca Ribley interned this summer at WKYC in Cleveland, and Higaki interned in the video production and news department at the Cleveland Clinic.
An internship is required for all majors in the Department of Journalism and Digital Media. Our students intern regularly at a wide variety of places including radio and TV stations, newspapers, magazines, and video production houses.

Fox Sports Ohio Coordinating Producer talks to JDM students
Steve Warren, the Coordinating Producer for Fox Sports Ohio (formerly SportsTime Ohio) stopped by JDM's Sports Broadcasting class recently to talk about all things local sports production and how students can secure internships and ultimately, a first job.
"Students need two things to jump-start a career in media, a foundation of practical skills like writing, shooting and editing with a variety of media software, and a great attitude!" said Warren.
Warren, a graduate of the University of Akron and a veteran producer, director, editor and operations manager, told students internships are extremely important because typically they lead to entry level jobs.
Warren told JDM students they have an advantage over many college media students because of the variety of remote productions using authentic industry techniques the department exposes them to.
"We loved airing Ashland games on STO. Your student productions were excellent!" said Warren.

Katy says, “For other students who are looking for a worthwhile internship, I would suggest to utilize your resources and networking to find something that you could potentially see yourself doing for the rest of your life.” Along with many other activities on campus, Katy is involved in the Honors Program, Greek Life, The Collegian, Newman Ministries, and AUGIVS. JDM professor has notable sports story in Best American Sportswriting 2013
Matt Tullis, an assistant professor of journalism and digital media and the adviser of The Collegian, had a story selected as a notable sports story in Best American Sports Writing 2013.
"Feet of Clay, Heart of Iron" was published by SBNation Longform in October 2012. It chronicled horseshoe pitcher Brian Simmons as he tried to win his second consecutive World Horseshoe Pitching Championship.
The story had already been selected as one of 102 Spectacular Nonfiction Stories from 2012 by Byliner.com.
The book, which comes out today, is edited by Glenn Stout. This year's guest editor was J.R. Moehringer.
This is the second time a story by Tullis has been selected as a notable story in BASW. The last time happened in 2008, when his story "Perfect Pitch," also about horseshoe pitching, was selected. That story was published in the Columbus Dispatch.
You can follow Tullis on Twitter @matttullis. You can also follow his stories at Byliner.com.

JDM professor publishes story on SBNation Longform
Matt Tullis, an assistant professor of journalism and digital media, published the story, "Who is Stella Walsh: The story of the intersex Olympian" on the national literary sports journalism website SBNation Longform.
The story can be read here.
Stella Walsh came to Cleveland in 1911 as an infant. By her late teens, she was dominating local and national races, particularly short sprints. She won the gold medal in the 100 meter dash, running for her native Poland, at the 1932 Olympics, and the silver four years later in the same event in Berlin.
She continued her athletic career, setting at least 20 world records in track and field. Tragically, she was murdered in a department store parking lot in Cleveland in December 1980. Her autopsy unveiled a secret she had kept all of her life: that Stella Walsh was not entirely female.
This is the second time Tullis has published a story with SBNation Longform. In October 2012, he published the story "Feet of Clay, Heart of Iron," a profile of Brian Simmons, the world's second-best horseshoe pitcher. That story was listed in Byliner.com's list of 102 Spectacular Nonfiction Stories of 2012.

JDM preserves a part of Kates Gymnasium floor
It was a simple, yet genius question posed by JDM Operations Manager John Skrada to Paul Brady, Director of Maintenance and Grounds of AU Facilities Management, "Can we preserve a part of the floor?"
Skrada and AUTV-20 Advisor Tim McCarty had walked over to check out the Kates Gym renovations when they realized the floor was being cut up and hauled away.
Brady's answer? "Sure fellas, what part?"
After deciding the north end foul line, top of the key area and GLIAC logo in the paint would make a perfect addition to JDM's TV Studio, the area was marked off with duct tape and workers cut the area into six pieces. The pieces were then transported back to the CFA, fitted back together and received a good cleaning.
It's only fitting that the interviews for next season's preview show featuring the reigning D2 Women's National Champion be shot on the 50-year-old floor that supported AU basketball and sent AUWBB off to San Antonio on their historic title run.
Look for a shiny 8' x 16' bit of AU history on AUTV-20 this fall!

JDM set to stream NCAA D-II Women's Regional Final Game
This year's broadcast will feature the all-star JDM faculty announcing team of Professor Steve Suess, WRDL's radio advisor handling play-by-play duties and Collegian advisor Professor Matt Tullis, who worked last December's football game, as color analyst.
"Last year JDM paid a rights fee and tape-delayed the broadcast for AUTV-20. It was a great experience for our students but very cost prohibitive," said JDM TV Advisor, Tim McCarty.
"This year - like last semester's playoff football game - our department decided to stream the game live on Mediasite. For our program to produce a non-commercial show and deliver via streaming, the NCAA waived the rights fee," McCarty said.
You can see the FREE stream here.
JDM will produce Monday night's game exactly like the four SportTime Ohio broadcasts produced this year with JDM students manning the technical positions and a local remote production company, S-and-S Productions, providing the TV Truck.
"Our relationships with professional production companies like S-and-S, who specialize in live remote sports production, is what allows us to offer unique 'value added' experiences for JDM majors," said McCarty.
"A 5-camera, 2-replay sports production with two announcers, over 100 pre-built graphics, slo-motion replays and 10 channels of audio is an extremely difficult technical achievement for the pros, much less a college media program," said McCarty, himself a veteran of over 2,000 sports remote productions.
DON'T FORGET: If you can't watch the game online you can follow all the action live on Twitter @AshlandJDM and @matttullis. (He'll be talking and typing at the same time!)

New podcast by JDM professor
Journalism and Digital Media professor Matt Tullis has launched a podcast that focuses on literary journalism and the reporters who write it.
The podcast, named Gangrey: The Podcast, is produced twice a month. The first episode featured freelance writer Justin Heckert, who wrote "The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly," a story about a teenage girl who can feel no pain that was published in The New York Times Magazine. You can listen to that episode here.
The second episode featured Michael J. Mooney, a reporter for D Magazine in Dallas. Mooney wrote the story "The Most Amazing Bowling Story Ever" last year. The story is about a recreational bowler's run at perfection, and has been lauded as one of the best nonfiction stories of 2012. You can listen to that episode here.
The idea for the podcast came from Ashland University senior Glenn Battishill, who serves as The Collegian's managing editor and WRDL's program director. Battishill is working on the podcast with Tullis, serving as a producer. Also working on the podcast is AU senior Tyler Remmel. Remmel, who is also The Collegian's design editor, has designed the podcast's logos and is redesigning the podcast website.
Steve Suess, a professional instructor and adviser to WRDL, is also assisting with the podcast.
The podcast is named after a well-respected journalism website called Gangrey.com. That site was founded by reporters at the Tampa Bay Times, and regularly links to the best literary journalism of the day. The founders of that site gave Tullis permission to use the Gangrey name, and have been key in promoting it to a national audience.
You can follow the podcast on Twitter @gangreypodcast.
