JDM Streaming AU home football games this fall

JDM's hard working remote production crew will again stream all five AU home football games live this fall. Games will also rebroadcast on AUTV20.

"Because we lost several seniors who were regulars on our remote production crew, like a sports team, we had to reload with incoming freshman." AUTV20 Advisor Tim McCarty said. "The new folks all did great!"

As most live remote productions go, JDM's first broadcast was not without a few glitches.

"Beside some first game jitters by our inexperienced crew, our biggest problem for the first game was a technical problem that kept our stream from showing up on the JDM Streaming web page. But we've fixed that and are ready to go Saturday night!" McCarty said.

For those who missed Game 1, you can see a rebroadcast on AUTV20, or at a direct link to the feed.

Game 2 will stream live on the JDM's Streaming page starting on Saturday, September 13th at 7pm.

Tullis participates in Nieman Storyboard post

This week, Nieman Storyboard, a project of the NiemanFoundation for Journalism at Harvard University, has been publishing reading lists from some of the top narrative journalism professors in the country.

Today, Matt Tullis, associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Digital Media at Ashland University and host of Gangrey: ThePodcast, was included in Nieman Storyboard’s post. Tullis also serves as the adviser to The Collegian.

Other faculty members who were asked to give examples of what their students were reading are teaching at places like ColumbiaUniversity’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Indiana University School of Journalism, and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Tullis, whose JDM 407 Narrative Journalism is being taught on Wednesday nights this semester, has arranged to have nationally-prominent magazine writers Skype into class every week. Students are reading stories by those reporters and then get the chance to talk with them and ask them questions for up to an hour each Wednesday.

So far, the class has spoken with Mike Sager, who writes for Esquire and has a long and storied career as a narrative journalist and novelist, and Michael Kruse of the Tampa Bay Times. Throughout the rest of the semester, students will get to talk with reporters from Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, ESPN: The Magazine, New York, and Vanity Fair, among others.

JDM student's hosting gig offers real-world TV experience

Collegian Sports Editor, Kevin Stoicovy
For JDM senior and Collegian Sports Editor, Kevin Stoicovy, the prospect of showing up on campus and only working in one type of media simply wasn't an option. As JDM's most recent graduates proved, a successful major in the program must have a full range of media production experiences.

Which is why when he was asked to host the 2014 Ashland University Football Preview Show, Stoicovy jumped at the opportunity.

"The experience of hosting the football preview show on TV was a culmination of effort and work done in the classroom that will make me more confident and marketable in a competitive job environment." Stoicovy said.

JDM aerials of the Troop Center
For AUTV20 Advisor Tim McCarty, providing real-world experience is an important component of JDM because it helps students prepare for the demands of a converged media industry.

"This is not an easy assignment for the host. We produce this piece exactly how ESPN, or Fox Sports Cleveland would produce it as the turn-around from shoot to air is less than two weeks. We typically shoot the host stand-ups in one day in and around Jack Miller Stadium. The demands we placed on Kevin were exactly the same demands placed on any professional sports reporter." McCarty said.

Despite the challenges of the TV experience, Stoicovy thought his confidence showed in his performance on camera.

"I felt I was prepared thanks to my experience in the classroom at AU and at previous internships I've had. Not only did I feel confident in front of the camera, but I felt comfortable as well, it something I did not have before I started working with AUTV20." Stoicovy said.

The 2014 Ashland Football Preview Show hosted by Kevin Stoicovy airs at 6am, 1pm, 8pm and 11pm  on AUTV20, or check out the show online at the JDM YouTube Channel!
